What types of plastic can be recycled?

Most plastics are recyclable, however whether this is possible or not depends upon several factors.

The plastic needs to be of a type that is recyclable, good quality, and clean. There needs to be sufficient volume to make it economical. There needs to be an end product that creates demand for recyclate. There also needs to be a recycling facility located near enough to ensure transport and logistics costs are low. If all of these elements are present, there is a good chance the product can be cost effectively recycled.

Most hard plastics have a small number on them inside a triangular recycling symbol. When you talk to a recycler, it is very useful to have this information handy, as the number can often tell you what type of plastic you have.

To help you to understand what these mean, here they are:

  • #1 plastic: Polyethylene Terephthalate.
  • #2 plastic: High-Density Polyethylene.
  • #3 Plastic: Polyvinyl Chloride.
  • #4 Plastic: Low-Density Polyethylene.
  • #5 Plastic: Polypropylene.
  • #6 Plastic: Polystyrene.
  • #7 Plastic: Other. (note – not all of these are recyclable)
